1. How does a biodegradable dog funeral urn work?

The Tree Urn dog funeral urn is made from agglomerated cork — a natural, renewable material that decomposes in the soil over 6 to 8 years. The urn is designed to hold the ashes of your dog in its lower compartment, while a young tree or green plant is placed in the upper compartment. The two are separated by the Regulator, an internal piece that keeps the ashes and the plant roots apart while allowing gradual nutrient exchange over time.

Once buried, the roots of the tree pass through the cork walls and draw nutrients from the ashes, creating a living memorial that grows stronger with every season. This natural process transforms loss into a cycle of renewal — your dog gives back to life.

Each urn is smooth to the touch, aesthetically refined, and fully compliant with European environmental standards for pet cremation.

2. Free custom printing: express your bond

Every bond with a dog is unique. That is why we personalize each urn with a message of your choosing — printed directly onto the cork, all the way around, free of charge with every order.

You can print a name, a date, a short sentence, or a symbol that holds a special place in your shared story. Printing on cork produces a warm, deep contrast — natural and beautifully legible. It is a permanent gesture of love, visible for as long as the urn rests on the earth, before gently returning to it.

Note: due to the microporous structure of cork, we do not print photographs — the result would not be optimal. We recommend a name, a meaningful date, a short text, or a simple symbol such as a paw print, a heart, or a star.

You may also add your own handwritten message using a permanent marker — a deeply personal and intimate gesture.

“This personalization ensures that each urn is one of a kind — just like the story you shared with your dog.”

3. Support to say goodbye and let go

Losing a dog is a true emotional journey. The Tree Urn process is not just about the urn — it is a structured sequence of gestures that helps you navigate grief at your own pace.

After receiving the urn and placing the ashes inside, you may keep it at home for a few days or weeks. Some families light candles around it, place photographs nearby, or write a letter to put inside. This time of vigil allows you to maintain a symbolic connection before moving on to the planting stage.

The act of planting is the pivotal moment — a concrete gesture that marks the transition from loss to renewal. Burying the urn is the final step: a conscious act of letting go that frees both the departed and the living.

Legislation varies by country, but in most of Europe, burying a pet’s ashes in your garden is legal under certain conditions. The table below summarizes the main rules.

Country Private land burial Key requirements
United Kingdom Legal Must be owned land; not near water sources.
France Legal Animal under 40kg; 35m away from dwellings and water.
Germany Legal (most states) Not in water protection areas; minimum 50cm deep.
Spain / Italy Legal Varies by municipality; vet certificate often required.
Netherlands / Belgium Legal Permitted on private property; depth rules apply.
Sweden / Norway Legal Follow local environmental guidelines.

When using a Tree Urn biodegradable cork urn, the legal constraints are even more flexible — cremation ashes are considered sterile and safe for the environment, and burying a biodegradable urn is generally treated as scattering, not as an official burial.

5. An eco-friendly tribute

Cork is a natural material harvested without harming trees. It decomposes slowly in the soil, enriching it as it breaks down. The tree you choose receives natural nutrients from the ashes, creating a beautiful cycle: your dog gives back to life.

  • Plant the urn in your garden for a private and intimate place of remembrance.
  • Place it in a forest or natural area (with permission) to gift a tree to nature.
  • Bury it in a large pot on your terrace to keep the tree close by indoors.

6. What size urn do I need?

To calculate the volume of ashes after cremation, divide your dog’s weight by 28. Choose the size that best matches your pet.

Size Dog weight Ash volume
S Up to 10 kg ~0.40 litre
M Up to 45 kg ~1.6 litres

Frequently asked questions

Is the personalization really free?
Yes. Custom printing is included free of charge with every Tree Urn order. You provide your message, name, date, or symbol when placing your order, and we print it directly onto the cork urn before shipping.

What can I print on the urn?
You can print a name, a date, a short sentence, or a simple symbol such as a paw print, a heart, or a star. Due to the microporous structure of cork, photographs are not recommended as the result is not optimal.

Can I keep the urn at home before planting it?
Yes. The cork urn can be kept indoors for as long as you wish. Its natural degradation only begins once buried in moist soil. Many families keep the urn for weeks or months while they find the right moment and the right place.

What tree should I choose for my dog?
Tree Urn does not supply the plant — you choose it at your local nursery. Popular choices include oak (strength and loyalty), birch (gentleness), rosemary (remembrance), or lavender (calm and peace). Choose the one that best reflects your companion’s spirit.

Is it legal to bury a dog’s ashes in my garden?
In the vast majority of European countries, no specific regulation governs the handling of pet ashes. Unlike human ashes, which are strictly regulated, you are free to keep, scatter, or bury your dog’s ashes as you see fit. Always check local rules for your specific country or municipality.

Do you deliver outside Europe?
Yes. Tree Urn ships across the EU, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. Standard delivery takes 3 to 5 business days.
